Byblos also known as Gebal is the ancient Phoenician city located on the Mediterranean sea in present day Lebanon. The name Byblos in Greek means papyrus or book also meaning bible in English. It is said to be one of the oldest inhabited cities in the world dating back more than 7000 years.
The location of the ancient city was forgotten until re-discovered by the French scholar Ernest Renan in 1860. In further excavations between 1919 and 1924 Pierre Montet’s uncovered tombs of nine ancient rulers of Byblos.
